Contemporary Rhetorical Theory
Application Exercises
|
- Compare an organization that you belong to (fraternity/sorority, social organization, sports team) of other students based on Habermas' notion of the ideal speech situation. Which other of his ideas might apply to the organization? Do you feel that the ideal situation is always a good idea? Why or why not?
- Think of a popular current film and explain its appeal to audiences, using any of the symbolic interactionist theories (e.g., SCT, Narrative paradigm). For example, does it have coherence and fidelity? Does it ring true with your values? Note that-if you use narrative paradigm-the theory is not trying to say what the text is about, but why it relates to different receivers differently.
- Bring examples of a work memo to class. Discuss it in terms of the fantasy theme(s) presented in certain portions of the memo. What is the vision the organization wants people to share? How effective are they? What are some other ways they might rally the employees around a particular vision?
