Application Exercise

Look in the newspaper and find topics that are reported on which have a high likelihood of impacting the bulk of the public directly. For example, the topic of new traffic or tax laws would directly affect most people, while topics about a fire or car accident would not. Now, write the names of the stories you find most interesting. Also write down which stories are most prominent. Consider whether the stories that are most likely to affect you directly are the same ones you find most interesting. Does your answer give any indication how the issues you think about may be different from the most important or influential issues for society? If so, should you alter in some way how you read the newspaper?
