Cultivation Theory

One of the most interesting points to make about cultivation theory is that people do not have to be exposed to the media for the media to affect them. According to this argument, television is so powerful and pervasive that even people who avoid it are influenced, though they are not influenced as heavily as those who are heavy media users. Think about the number of times you have learned a movie plot, known a media character, or hummed the theme to a popular commercial without actually seeing the movie, television show, or commercial that contained these things. Regular conversation and interaction with others carries on television’s themes.
