Beyond the Book
Discourse of Masculinity and Femininity
|
Many Foucault scholars have identified the discourse of masculinity and the discourse of femininity within our culture, each with its own rules, cultural assumptions, and power-knowledge relationship. The discourse of masculinity is generally assumed to confirm greater power and knowledge on the males while the females in the discourse of femininity receive lesser power. As you can see from the discussion in the textbook, in the news reports written and carried on TV about the heroes of United Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania, the males get more emphasis, exemplifying the power consistent with the discourse of masculinity.
