McLuhan and the Global Village

In The Gutenberg Galaxy, McLuhan (1962) observed that electronic mass media were collapsing space and time barriers in human communication to enable people to communicate on a global scale. He coined the term global village to describe this change. Today, the global village is used as a metaphor to describe the Internet and Web. The Internet globalizes communication by allowing users from around the world to connect with each other. Similarly, web-connected computers enable people to link their web sites together. For instance, it is just as easy to create a link between a web site located in your hometown and a web site located around the world.
