Selecting Your Topic, Purpose, and...
Short Speech Technique
|
The short speech technique provides a vehicle for integrating lots of short speeches into the course in addition to the traditional longer and more carefully crafted speeches. These short speeches all deal with the contents of the chapter, and so serve the dual function of covering the text material but also affording opportunities to practice your new public speaking skills. As the course progresses, these short speeches should incorporate increasingly sophisticated application of the public speaking principles. In each chapter a variety of topics are listed. Selected one of them and prepare and deliver a two minute speech in which you accomplish the purpose identified.
- explain what makes a good speech topic
- explain the thesis of a particular movie or television sitcom
- explain the thesis of one or a few recent lectures you've heard
- evaluate the topics of recent talk shows against the criteria for a worthwhile and appropriate topic
- explain the cultural factors operating in this class that need to be taken into consideration by the speaker selecting a topic and purpose
