  • SIL International
    SIL International is a website intended to ". . . facilitate language-based development through research, translation, and literacy." From this site, you can download phonetic fonts and a variety of speech analysis freeware. The site also contains a wealth of information on language, language development, and speech ethnography.

  • Spectrogram Reading
    This is a comprehensive site at the Center for Spoken Language Understanding at University of Colorado. The page referenced here is a tutorial on spectrogram reading that highlights the acoustic differences between English phonemes.

  • International Phonetic Association
    This is the home page of the International Phonetic Association. It contains the latest revision of the International Phonetic Alphabet and information on how to obtain phonetic fonts for use in word processing and web pages.

  • Transcription
    This is an informative tutorial on phonetic transcription from Kevin Russell, an instructor in the Linguistics Department at the University of Manitoba.

  • Vowels
    Also from the University of Manitoba, this website provides a graphic of the vowel quadrilateral.

  • Phonetics: The Sounds of English and Spanish
    Wow. The University of Iowa does it again! This website contains schematics, animations, and videos of English and Spanish consonants and vowels along with the phonetic character for each speech sound. The work is comprehensive, of high quality and creative; really worth your time.

  • Speech Internet Dictionary
    This is a comprehensive glossary of terms used in the study of phonetics presented by the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics at University College London. In addition to definitions, it includes phonetic symbols, illustrations, and sound files.
