Advertising
Objectives

After studying this chapter you should be prepared to discuss or answer the following key questions:
  • Advertising is most prominent in a free-market economy. As you study this chapter try to analyze how and why advertising and the free market are related.
  • Advertising uses social images and appeals to people's psychological and physical needs. Its content may sell a produce or persuade people to adopt a specific lifestyle. Given this impact, think about how advertising is related to the marketplace of ideas.
  • Some individuals think that certain types of advertising should be banned because well-produced messages have an enormous impact. After you learn about the various types of influence advertising has on society, try to decide whether advertising significantly changes our society?
  • Politics has changed with advertising, particularly as political managers have learned to master television. After you learn about how political advertising has changed, think about its effects on democratic society.
  • Internet advertising is still in its infancy compared to more traditional forms of advertising. A major issue is how advertising will make use of the new electronic technologies in the long run. What are the implications here for the Internet, online services, and older media?
