CEC Content Standard INTASC Principle
Special Educators… All teachers…
Understand the field as an evolving and changing discipline. (#1) Understand the central concepts, tools, inquiry, structures of the discipline(s) they teach and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students. (#1)
Understand the similarities and differences in human development and the characteristics between and among individuals with and without exceptional learning needs. (#2) Understand how children learn and develop and can provide learning opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development of each learner. (#2)
Understand the effects that an exceptional condition can have on an individual's learning in school and throughout life. (#3) Use an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. (#5).
Actively create learning environments for individuals with exceptional learning needs that foster cultural understanding, safety and emotional well-being, positive social interactions, and active engagement of individuals with exceptional learning needs (#5). Plan instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals. (#7)
Are familiar with technologies to support and enhance communication of individuals with exceptional needs. (#6) Understand and use formal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner. (#8)
Develop a variety of individualized transition plans. (#7) Foster relationships with school colleagues, families, and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well-being. (#10)
Use the results of assessments. (#8)  
Use collaboration to facilitate the successful transitions of individuals with exceptional learning needs across settings and services. (#10)
