Learning Objectives

After reading and studying Chapter Ten, the student should be able to:

  • Define gender stratification and explain the significance of gender and age as master statuses.
  • Differentiate between the concepts of sex and gender and sociologically apply each concept correctly.
  • Discuss gender differences from a biological and cultural perspective.
  • Explain how females have come to be designated as minority group.
  • Discuss the origins of patriarchy and the interplay between the biology of reproduction and male dominance.
  • Define feminism and explain its origins in the United States.
  • Discuss the ways in which inequality is perpetuated in the education system, health care, the workplace, and politics.
  • Discuss the pay gap between males and females and describe the impact of the glass ceiling and glass escalator.
  • Define sexual harassment, its definition, features, and impact on society.
  • Discuss the primary features of violence against women and use symbolic interactionism and conflict theory to analyze violence against women.
  • Explain why age is socially constructed and how attitudes toward aging are rooted in society.
  • Define ageism, what is meant by "the graying of America," and discuss the relationship between industrialization and ageism.
  • Discuss disengagement theory, activity theory, and continuity theory.
  • Apply conflict theory to an understanding of the struggle and controversy over social security and legislation.
  • Understand the difference in male and female experience when male power is certain.
