After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Understand adolescence and discuss why it must be considered in multiple contexts.
  2. Describe the physical development that occurs during adolescence, and discuss how it can affect the self-image of an adolescent.
  3. Understand cognitive development in adolescence, and explain its impact on social and academic functioning.
  4. Discuss key aspects of emotional and social development during adolescence and compare how each might be related to positive and negative outcomes.
  5. Understand the factors that contribute to the development of gender identity and gender roles, and outline the impact of gender stereotypes on the development of self.
  6. Explain the significance of friendships in adolescence, and trace the importance of friends throughout the developmental spectrum.
  7. Discuss adolescent sexual behavior and state some key statistics related to sexual behavior.
  8. Understand how attitudes about sexuality influence social development and personal behavior.
  9. Outline the physiological, sexual, and sensory changes that occur during adulthood.
  10. Describe the various theories of aging.
  11. Describe the cognitive changes that take place during adulthood.
  12. Compare and contrast Erikson’s and Levinson’s stage theories of adult development.
  13. Discuss how myths and stereotypes have led to biases against the elderly.
  14. Describe the symptoms of specific brain disorders such as dementia, and define the different types of dementia.
  15. List the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, and discuss some of the risk factors for developing this disorder.
  16. List the common causes of death and discuss some of the factors related to this final life transition.
