After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Define consciousness and describe the continuum view of conscious awareness.
  2. Describe and differentiate the mysterians, materialist, and evolutionary views and theories of consciousness.
  3. Develop an understanding of circadian rhythms and discuss how they impact human behavior and functioning.
  4. List the stages of the sleep cycle and discuss the various phenomena that one is likely to experience at each stage.
  5. Explain how sleep deprivation impacts our functioning.
  6. Discuss the major theories and research related to the question of why we sleep and what makes us sleep and wake.
  7. List and describe the major sleep disorders.
  8. Discuss the factors that might impact our dream content and differentiate between normal and lucid dreaming.
  9. Compare and contrast the psychodynamic, cognitive, evolutionary, and physiological views of dreaming.
  10. Describe biofeedback and its uses and critically evaluate its effectiveness in helping people manage physiological problems.
  11. Describe the effects of hypnosis and discuss some of the alternative explanations and controversies that are associated with hypnosis.
  12. Describe the two types of meditation and summarize their effects or uses.
  13. Define and differentiate between tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal.
  14. Identify the different types of psychoactive drugs and their influence on behavior and functioning.
  15. State the three criteria for substance abuse and understand why people use and abuse drugs.
