After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Define I/O psychology and describe its five broad areas: human resources psychology, motivation of job performance, job satisfaction, teamwork, and leadership.
  2. Describe the personnel functions of human resource psychologists in the areas of job analysis, personnel selection, education and training, and performance appraisal.
  3. Explain what factors might contribute to motivation on the job and describe characteristics of jobs that might cause stress or unhappiness.
  4. Identify and distinguish between goal-setting, expectancy, and equity theories of motivation and job performance.
  5. Describe the three approaches to management and discuss their influence on motivation.
  6. Define a team and discuss the role of the team in companies.
  7. Compare and contrast the three phases of research on leadership: traits, behaviors, and situations. For each phase, discuss some of the relevant research related to each phase.
  8. Explain what constitutes effective leadership.
  9. List five factors that should be considered when thinking about the future of I/O psychology.
  10. Describe how human factors psychologists are involved in helping people and machines work together more efficiently.
  11. Discuss the different types of designs that have been used to enhance workplace safety.
  12. Name the multiple roles that psychologists play in the legal system, and provide a brief definition and example for each.
  13. Describe how sport psychology attempts to bring order to the study of athletic performance.
  14. State the relationship between arousal and athletic performance as it relates to athletic performance.
  15. Distinguish between arousal and anxiety, and describe some of the stress management techniques used to relieve anxiety and arousal while increasing athletic performance.
