Scholastic is a familiar resource for most teachers. This article provides low-tech, mid-tech, and high-tech ideas to make math fun at the same time it helps encourage mathematical thinking. Examples of ways that computer use can help are also featured.

This fascinating list and description of activities designed to incorporate technology into the study of math include information that ranges from the use of a word processor for story problems to the use of spreadsheets to help calculate the value of words (each letter has a specific dollar value) as they seek words that are worth exactly $1.00.

Elementary, middle school, and college-level teachers joined together to investigate the integration of technology in K-16 math classes. Each teacher described how they achieved this integration and how it could be applied to other disciplines. The electronic Smart Board was an integral tool in the elementary school activities. Spreadsheets and graphing calculators were used in another approach at the secondary and college levels in which math is integrated with physics and chemistry examples. Digital cameras and foreign lesson plans were used in another college setting. Excel and Geometer’s Sketchpad were used in courses for elementary teachers and for college geometry classes. Other technologies are also discussed in the article.

In addition to not having enough time and resources, teachers find that the absence of models for the integration of math, science, and technology with good teaching make it even more difficult to bring the use of technology into the classroom. The author of this article developed a model, that while hard to say, should help teachers with their lesson plans as they seek to incorporate these different areas into a meaningful whole. The model is called the “Constructural Multi-Modalities Model for MST Inquiry Units.” It is based on research and with a focus on Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives and Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. The focus of the model in this article is on the integration of math and technology into science inquiry units in grades 4-6. Technology helps promote constructivism and active hands-on problem-solving activities.

Elementary Education Resources: Mathematics is a collection of links to elementary math sites such as Biographies of Women in Math, CartoonMath, and PreK thru Second Grade. There are sites for students to make math fun, to help with their math homework, to go into more advanced topics, and math activities and games including some using calculators. There are even sites that focus on the history of mathematics and there are lesson plans for teachers in a variety of areas to help integrate math and technology.
