On the Web! Activities |

Topic Oriented and Full Service
Getting connected is the first step to using the Internet in your classroom. Web portals are your ramps on to the Information Superhighway. They offer you a website focused on your interest and dedicated to providing you the best possible related services, resources, and links. Portals can be general purpose or academic, but all will help you more directly find what you need on the Internet.
Portals also provide a broad range of services from email to forums to web hosting. These services vary widely so it is important to evaluate a portal carefully before deciding to use it. Once you establish an email account and learn how to use a portal’s specific services, you will find you have invested a considerable amount of time and energy. For busy teachers, it is important to evaluate carefully before making that investment.
Activity:
Explore the list of portals below to determine which would be useful in your classroom. Check to see what services are included and if any of these will host your class website for free or for a modest cost. Check which tools they offer for creating web pages and how much space you will have for storage. Consider the other education tools and resources available. Pick your favorite portal and be prepared to defend your choice when presenting it to your peers.
