Web Sites

  • Research Design
This site is Trochim’s research design section. It has links to information on several types of designs (e.g., experimental, quasi-experimental, etc.), internal validity, and several other related topics.

  • Designing Designs for Research
This is an excellent discussion of the issues related to developing research designs, particularly those known as experimental designs.

  • The Basics of Experimental Design
This is a non-technical guide to issues related to experimental designs.

  • Experimental Research Methods: Major Designs and Data Analyses
This site provides some insight into the nature of experimental control, different experimental designs, and the analysis of data from those designs. The latter section is particularly good.

  • Introduction to Validity
This is an excellent discussion of the concepts related to experimental validity in research.

  • Internal Validity
This is Trochim’s discussion of internal validity.

  • Threats to Internal Validity and External Validity
This is a web page on internal and external validity developed by Tom Renckly at Troy State University Montgomery for his online research course. It provides an excellent discussion of the threats to both internal and external validity. It also contains an evaluation of a research study with particular emphasis of internal and external validity issues.

  • Securing Internal Validity
This paper provides a good introduction to internal validity treats and the things one can do through research design to control for them.

  • External Validity
This is the section in Trochim’s site that relates to external validity and threats to it.

  • ERIC Digest - True and Quasi-Experimental Designs
This is an excellent resource on true and quasi-experimental designs. It discusses the limitations, recommendations for evaluation, and additional resources.

  • Quasi-Experimental Design
This is Trochim’s discussion of many issues related to quasi-experimental design. It contains links to many other pages related to specific quasi-experimental designs.

  • Two-Group Experimental Designs
This is Trochim’s discussion of basic experimental designs. It contains several valuable links to other pages that discuss specific designs or issues related to them.

  • Single Subject Designs
This is a web page on single subject designs developed by Tom Renckly at Troy State University Montgomery for his online research course. It provides an excellent discussion of the basic AB designs and the relevant threats to both internal and external validity.

  • Multiple Baseline Designs
This is a web page on single subject designs developed by Tom Renckly at Troy State University Montgomery for his online research course. It provides an excellent discussion of multiple baseline designs, the relevant threats to both internal and external validity, and the evaluation of a multiple baseline study.

  • Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior
This is a research journal focused on single subject research.
