  • The Qualitative Debate
This is Trochim’s take on the classic “quantitative and qualitative” debate.

  • Choosing Qualitative Research: A Primer for Technology Education Educators
A paper from the Digital Library and Archive that discuss many facets of qualitative research. There are numerous references to Tyler, Lincoln, Guba, and Eisner that help create a sense of the unique aspects of qualitative research.

  • QualPage - Resources for Qualitative Research
This is Judy Norris’ web site that lists many resources for qualitative researchers including announcements of conferences and workshops, conceptual foundations, resources, electronic journals, discussion forums, methods, data analysis, conference proceedings, organizations and interest groups, and dissemination of information.

  • The Qualitative Report
This is an index of numerous qualitative research web sites.

  • Qualitative Approaches
This is a part of Trochim's web site that briefly discusses four types of qualitative approaches: ethnography, phenomenology, field research, and grounded theory. The discussion presents a slightly different perspective than that offered in the text.

  • Day 6 Ethnographic Research Design
A good description of ethnographic research with a good chart describing the possible research roles. This paper goes on to discuss interviewing and documents and artifacts collection.

  • Qualitative Data Collection
Trochim’s site on qualitative data collection.

  • Participant Observation
A paper on participant observation which discusses the pros and cons of participant-involved studies.

  • Grounded Theory as Scientific Method
This is a discussion of grounded theory as it relates to scientific inquiry. There is some very useful information related to grounded theory design.

  • A Synthesis of Ethnographic Research
A rather lengthy, but thorough, paper on the synthesis of ethnographic research. It contains a discussion of the term and suggestions on how to actually perform such research.

  • Qualitative Validity
This is Trochim’s discussion of four criteria against which qualitative research design should be judged. There is a brief but cogent discussion in the opening paragraph about the different meanings of “validity” when examined from either quantitative or qualitative perspectives.

  • Introduction to Designing Qualitative Research
This is a nice introduction to designing qualitative research which includes the following topics: Introduction, Sampling, Phases of Data Collection and Analysis, Validity, Disciplined Subjectivity, Standards of Adequacy, Course Overview Map and References. The terminology is based on that of McMillan and Schumacher’s Introduction to Educational Research text and is somewhat different from that of the text. There is, however, some relevant information and perspective to be gained from this site.

  • Bridges: Mixed Methods Network for Behavioral, Social, and Health Sciences
This is a good resource for mixed method information maintained by Abbas Tashakkori, a leading author on mixed method designs. It is particularly relevant given the paucity of information available on the web.

  • User Friendly Handbook for Mixed Methods Evaluations
This is a handbook edited by Joy Frechtling and Laure Sharp of Westat and published by the National Science Foundation. Although it is written from an evaluation perspective, it contains much relevant material related to an introduction to mixed methods, an overview of qualitative methods and analytical techniques, and designing and reporting mixed-methods evaluations.
