Chapter 3 - Locating and Reviewing Related Literature



After reading Chapter 3, you should have mastered each of the following objectives.



  1. Identify the general and specific purposes for reviewing literature.
  2. Identify the six steps to review related literature.
  3. Define the term secondary source and identify secondary sources relevant to a specific research problem.
  4. Define the term primary source and identify primary sources relevant to a specific research problem.
  5. Differentiate primary and secondary sources in terms of their contribution to a literature review.
  6. Identify key terms relevant to a specific research problem and conduct a search of the ERIC Thesaurus to broaden and narrow these terms.
  7. Identify the appropriate journal indexes that can be used to locate educational research.
  8. Conduct a computerized ERIC search relevant to a specific research problem.
  9. Outline three steps necessary to writing a review of the literature. Discuss the differences between writing a quantitative and qualitative literature review with regard to purpose, use of the literature, and organization.
  10. Identify the criteria used to evaluate literature reviews and evaluate a specific review using this criteria.
