Student Objectives

  1. Define research and the characteristics of educational research.
  2. Discuss the importance of research in education.
  3. Define enquiry-based research.
  4. Identify and discuss five phases of developing evidence-based knowledge to improve educational practices.
  5. Identify and describe the six guiding principles of scientific, evidence-based inquiry.
  6. Identify the seven phases of the research process.
  7. Be able to distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research in terms of underlying assumptions, purpose, research methods and process, typical studies, researcher's role, and the importance of context.
  8. Define basic, applied, evaluation, and action research. Differentiate them in terms of the topics addressed, purposes, levels of discourse, and intended uses.
  9. Describe the interdisciplinary nature of educational research. Identify the advantages of an interdisciplinary nature.
  10. Identify the limitations of educational research in concept and practice.
