Chapter Summary

Chapter One: Understanding the Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education sets the stage for Affirming Diversity. Key terms, concepts, goals and assumptions of multicultural education through a sociopolitical lens are investigated, situated and defined. Nieto and Bode use demographics representing the mosaic of U.S. schools and society to illustrate the change in population and the need for multicultural education for all children. They describe the case study approach used throughout the book that repositions students' voices in academic research. They explore students' lives in U.S. schools by explicitly looking at social class, racial, ethnic, linguistic and cultural groups while avoiding generalizations and stereotypes. Nieto and Bode respond to critics of multicultural education and the practices and policies of federal and state standards, such as No Child Left Behind. They conclude the chapter with the possibilities of a multicultural approach through the nature of schooling and the role of teachers.
