Chapter 2 |
|
In Chapter Two: About Terminology, the reader is asked to think about the implications of using terminology to describe groups of people. This chapter explores the reality of language as an ever changing, complex system of both oppression and identification. Race, a common signifier of difference within language, is examined as a social construct. Then Nieto and Bode address words that are currently used to identify ethnic and cultural groups in the United States, such as Native Americans, American Indians, Latinos, Hispanics, Whites, European Americans, and people of color. They challenge us to examine the words we use, consider the historical representation, the impact on the individual, the group and the institutional implications of power.
