Question 1.

Imagine that you were hired to teach in a brand new school. Before the school year begins, the district organizes a professional development seminar with teachers and administrators to prepare a mission statement on diversity for your new school. The school is located in an affluent suburban neighborhood where 95% of the population is European American and 5% is a combination of African American, Latino/a, and Asian American. As the meeting begins the principal starts the discussion by stating "We don't need multicultural education here; Most of our students are White." When the teachers are asked to respond to this statement, you:

Question 2.

At the beginning of the school year, you meet and plan with a team of teachers in your grade level. Having completed a course on multicultural education, you decide to begin the school year by offering ideas to the team on how to incorporate multicultural education into the teaching and practices of the team. One teacher responds with "I want to include multicultural education in my curriculum, but there's just no time for it." How would you respond?
