Problem Posing Questions
Problem Posing Questions
The following questions will help you assess your learning of the concepts in this chapter.
This activity contains 2 questions.
The following problem-posing scenario is based on the story of Susan, a new ESL teacher who attended a workshop given by Sonia Nieto. Susan, a teacher sincerely committed to the academic achievement of her Puerto Rican students, noticed the children wrinkling their noses when she would ask them if they understood her lesson. If you were Susan what would you do with this information?
Stop teaching and directly ask students why they are wrinkling their noses.
Be proactive. Learn about the students in your classroom, accommodate for their learning preferences, use activities to motivate students, and see yourself as a life-long learner.
Simply go on with the lesson, assuming that their nose wrinkling had no meaning.
Ruth recently accepted a teaching position in an elementary school with a large Vietnamese student population. What should she do?
She can do all of the above.
She could plan a variety of activities so that all students' preferences are accommodated.
She could investigate out-of-school activities in which her students are engaged.
She could reflect on how cultural differences may affect her students' learning and be open to changing her curriculum and pedagogy accordingly.
