Chapter Seven: Linguistic Diversity in U.S. Classrooms explores both the history of linguistic diversity in the U.S. as well as the current educational issues and implementations of bilingual education. With student achievement, in terms of learning English and maintaining students' native language at the forefront, Nieto and Bode demystify the sociopolitical climate that concurrently supports English Language Learners (ELL) and seeks to eliminate all bilingual programs. Furthermore, while the research concludes that bilingual education and language maintenance for English Language Learners is most beneficial for students, the authors engage the readers in bilingual education controversies. Through critical examination, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the sociopolitical context of bilingual education in U.S. schools.
