Chapter Summary

In Chapter Nine: Learning From Students, Nieto and Bode focus on the information gained from the students in the case studies. The students identified several themes related to success in U.S schools including: (a) a redefinition of education and success (b) pride and conflict in culture and language (c) the role of activities not related to academics in sustaining school success and (d) the important support of family, community and teachers. Each theme is critically explored in this chapter providing opportunities to create spaces for students, teachers, families, schools and communities to work together to support academic achievement for all students.
