Chapter Summary

In Chapter Eleven: Affirming Diversity: Implications for Teachers, Schools and Families the responsibilities of teachers, schools and parents are examined through a critical multicultural lens. This chapter extends the understanding of student achievement through the good pedagogical practices of teachers and their relationships with students, the development of extracurricular programs that are accessible to all students and a deeper understanding of familial strengths that offer support (although not always as schools might define support) and promote academic achievement in school. In order to fully envision a multicultural classroom or school that seeks a truly democratic society, a renegotiated understanding of what "American" means is in order. With an inclusive Americanism, Nieto and Bode provide models of multicultural education, offering hope for equitable schools and classrooms for U.S. students.
