This chapter features four theories of language acquisition and their contributions in explaining the developmental processes of language. These theories are: The psycholinguistic-syntactic theory, the semantic/cognitive theory, the sociolinguistic theory and the Emergentism theory. The chapter highlights the contributions and limitations of each of these theories and discusses where they fit in the broad spectrum of language development.
