Chapter 5 explores the ways that infants interact with a caregiver initially via eye gaze, head positions, a social smile, as well as proto-conversations. The chapter discusses the stages of communication intent and how both the child and the caregiver contribute uniquely to the social partnership. Further, this chapter details the 'baby talk' speech register used by caregivers to help keep the child interacting.
