By the age of five, a child has acquired the basics of language in the areas of syntax, morphology, phonology and pragmatics as well as semantics. Language development continues however as the child adds many new words and grammatical forms as well as more mature ways to transmit messages. In addition during this time the child refines narrative skills and appreciates the figurative, nonliteral use of language
