When children go to school, they are required to learn a whole new mode of communication-reading and writing. Research has shown that a child's oral language skills are one of the best predictors of his/her success with reading and writing. This chapter covers the development of reading skills from both a top-down and bottom-up perspective. In addition the chapter also chronicles spelling and writing development as complex, active processes.
