America has historically been known as a "melting pot" of peoples. The present composition of the American population only confirms the continuing existence of blending cultures in the United States. The presence of multiple dialects, bilingualism, and bilingual education in the classroom provides challenges for educators to be able to differentiate between language differences (dialects) and actual language deficits.
