Chapter Objectives

  1. State the authors’ definition of human sexuality.
  2. Describe the contributions made by the many disciplines involved to the study of human sexuality.
  3. Discuss the role of various value systems in making “rational” sexual choices.
  4. List the characteristics of critical thinking and explain how critical thinking skills can be applied to the study of human sexuality.
  5. Identify the characteristic sexual attitudes and practices of the historical eras described in this chapter.
  6. Relate how the origins of contemporary sexual attitudes and behaviors can be traced to earlier eras.
  7. Explain the foundations and recent history of sexuality as a “legitimate” area of scientific study.
  8. Identify the major focuses of biological sexual research and its contributions to the field.
  9. List the conclusions evolutionary psychologists draw from the evolutionary perspective, and identify the assumptions underlying each one.
  10. Explain what we can and cannot learn from cross-species comparisons of sexual behavior.
  11. Describe some of the cross-cultural variations in sexual behaviors and attitudes and discuss possible conclusions about the universality of human sexual behavior given the cross-cultural material presented.
  12. Explain the psychoanalytic theory and several learning theories of human sexual behavior.
  13. Describe the contributions that the sociocultural perspectives make to the study of human sexual behavior.
  14. Explain the importance of including multiple perspectives to understand sexuality.
