By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Describe when adolescence begins and ends.

  2. Be aware of changes in the demographics of the American adolescent population.

  3. Understand why adolescence is becoming more prolonged.

  4. Know how the Internet is changing the adolescent experience.

  5. Recognize how changes in their parents’ workplace impact adolescents’ lives.

  6. Explain how the educational needs of adolescents are evolving.

  7. Describe the ways that the family lives of adolescents are different now than in the past.

  8. Be familiar with how the sexual revolution has affected the adolescent experience.

  9. Be aware of the ways in which violence may touch adolescents’ lives.

  10. Understand what a correlation is and what it is not.

  11. Know the difference between true and quasi-experiments.
