Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Explain how the hypothalamus and pituitary gland work together to regulate sex hormone production.

  2. Know the functions of the three major sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) and where they are produced in the body.

  3. Describe how negative feedback loops regulate sex hormone levels in male and female bodies.

  4. List and describe the maturation and functions of the male sex organs.

  5. List and describe the maturation and functions of the female sex organs.

  6. Explain how hormone levels fluctuate over the course of the menstrual cycle.

  7. Know the menstrual problems than can affect adolescent girls.

  8. Discuss the development of secondary sexual characteristics in both males and females.

  9. Describe the determinants of a persons’ adult height.

  10. Understand the internal, non-sexual differences between male and female bodies.
