Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Know the major reasons for adolescent mortality.

  2. Explain the factors that influence adolescent health decisions.

  3. Contrast the three main body types: endomorph, ectomorph, and mesomorph.

  4. Discuss the importance of body satisfaction/dissatisfaction during adolescence.

  5. Describe the potential consequences of being an early or late maturing boy or girl.

  6. Understand the many contributors to adolescent obesity. Explain why the obesity rate is increasing.

  7. Be aware of the main symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Know which adolescents are most likely to develop the disorder and how it can be treated.

  8. Be able to distinguish bulimia from anorexia nervosa. Understand the symptoms, possible causes and treatment approaches for bulimia.

  9. Describe the most common nutritional deficiencies found in American adolescents and understand the reasons nutritional deficiency is so common.

  10. Discuss the benefits to adolescents who exercise regularly.

  11. Recognize the ways that adolescents’ sleep needs differ from those of children and adults.

  12. Explain why acne plagues adolescents more than children or adults.
