Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Know the three ways that modern cognitive developmental theory differs from Piaget’s views.

  2. Be able to list the steps in the information processing process.

  3. Be aware of how memory improves during adolescence.

  4. Understand how increased processing speed can enhance thinking and problem-solving.

  5. Know how inferential ability, thinking, and reasoning improves during adolescence.

  6. Summarize the “nine Cs” of decision-making as proposed by Mann and his colleagues.

  7. Recap Boyes’ and Chandlers’ theory of epistemological development.

  8. Be familiar with the parts of the brain that continue to mature during adolescence, and know the cognitive effects of these brain changes.

  9. Compare and contrast Sternberg’s triarchic theory with Gardner’s frames of mind approach to intelligence.

  10. Describe the two most widely used intelligence tests.

  11. Understand the various factors that influence of IQ test scores including anxiety, and bias.

  12. Be familiar with the uses and misuses of standardized IQ tests.

  13. Describe the SAT and be aware of the criticisms leveled against it.
