Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between self-concept and self-esteem and describe the relationship between the two.

  2. Explain the relationship between good self-concept mental health, interpersonal competence, and academic achievement.

  3. Describe and evaluate the self-enhancement thesis.

  4. Summarize the factors that enable individuals to develop strong self-concepts.

  5. Know how self concept changes during adolescence.

  6. Be familiar with the seven “subcrises” that Erikson felt were most important to the identity search.

  7. Compare and contrast Marcia’s four identity statuses.

  8. Critique Erikson’s and Marica’s theories of identity development.

  9. Describe the different acculturation options employed by ethnic minorities.

  10. Discuss the process by which individuals form an ethic identity.

  11. Contrast the terms “sex” and “gender”.

  12. Compare biological, gender schema, and learning theories of gender development.

  13. Describe androgyny including the benefits of being androgynous for boys and girls. Also, describe the typical adolescent’s sense of gender (i.e. the gender intensification hypothesis).
