By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

  3. Discuss the long-term emotional and behavioral effects of divorce on adolescent children.

  4. Know the factors that help determine whether adolescents react well to their parents’ divorce or not.

  5. Evaluate the statement “Joint custody arrangements work better than single custody arrangements”.

  6. Describe the effects of father absence on adolescents, citing gender differences when appropriate.

  7. Know the four different types of families that are headed by grandparents and the potential benefits and problems associated with each.

  8. What is known about the effects of parental death on adolescent adjustment?

  9. Discuss the development of masculinity/femininity and academic achievement of adolescents in single parent households.

  10. Compare adolescents raised in blended families with those raised in intact families and those raised by a single parent.

  11. Contrast the relationships that adolescents have with full siblings, half siblings, and step siblings.

  12. Describe the adjustment of adopted adolescents. Know how it compares to that of adolescents raised in families with a biological connection.
