Pepper Font

You will need to have a copy of the Pepper Font loaded on your PC to be able to print the transcription keys for these practice samples. If you haven't already downloaded the font from the Phonology Project website, go to the Pepper Font section of that site [http://www.waisman.wisc.edu/phonology/] and follow the download instructions. You can play the audio examples without having installed the Pepper Font, but you will need the font to print them. Even with the Pepper Font installed, the diacritics in the transcription keys on your monitor will not always line up with the main characters.

With the PEPPER Font installed, you can use the keyboard chart to type in the main characters right on the worksheets, but you will not be able to type in and align the diacritics. Thus, it is best to print and fill in the worksheets, then compare your transcription to the transcription provided on a hard copy of the key.

Media Player and Earphones/Speakers

When you click on the audio icon the file will be downloaded to your PC. You have the usual options of saving the file or playing it. As always, the size of the files, the speed of your internet connection, and the amount of internet traffic will determine how long it takes to download the samples. You have the usual choice of playing the file or storing it for play later. Obviously, the conversational samples are going to take a very long time to download!

At a minimum your media player needs to have stop-start controls and some type of "rewind" that allows you to replay sections of the sample as often as you like. You'll need to adjust the tone controls on the media player and on your speakers or earphones for optimum signal quality.

Windows Media Player is free to download from Microsoft.com and is equipped with the necessary capabilities to replay these clips.
