Research Project

Part I

  1. Complete the following Matrix for Behavioral Theories described in Chapter 5.
    Directions:
    • Place a "+" in the column if the theorist is associated with the Factor.
    • Place a "-" in the column if the theorist is not associated with the Factor.
    • Place a "?" in the column of you are unsure of the association.

Please see Pavlov’s part of the matrix for two examples.

    Part II
Directions: Using the matrix above, complete a paper that describes the differences and similarities between these theorists. In addition, provide your opinion of their beliefs/theories.

  2. Read the scenario and respond to the questions below.

Scenario ,br>It is mid-October of the school year in a 3rd grade class in an elementary school. The present teacher has been fired because s/he could not control the class. For example, while being escorted to lunch by their teacher, students would make a great deal of noise, run through the hallways and arrive almost 15 minutes late for lunch everyday. Also, in class children would call out answers and leave their seats without permission.

You have been hired to teach this class and get them under control.

    Questions

    • Based on your readings, list the causes for the behaviors the students are exhibiting.
    • Based on your readings and class discussions, describe the techniques you would utilize to obtain control of this class so that you can teach and your class can learn.

  3. Observe a classroom for a period 3 hours. In a reflection paper, identify and discuss the elements of the Behavioral Theory of Learning the teacher is utilizing during your observation period. During the observation, note and reflect on the these classroom practices:
    • Discipline in the classroom.
    • Reinforcers, consequences, punishers.
    • Shaping techniques employed by the teacher(s).
    • Reinforcement schedules.
    • Types of antecedents used.
    • Modeling and observational learning employed.

  4. Research, in the school district where you reside, the type of lesson planning that is required from the teachers. Describe this fully and compare it to the four phases of observational learning described by Albert Bandura. In your discussion, also provide your opinion of both the lesson plan format utilized by the teachers and the four phases of observational learning identified by Bandura.

  5. Compare and contrast the learning theories of B. F. Skinner with Albert Bandura using the Venn Diagram below. Then summarize your findings in a reaction paper that identifies the strengths and weaknesses for both theories and provide your opinion of each.

  6. If you were a first year teacher (please select an appropriate grade), identify the elements of Skinner, Bandura and Meichenbaum ‘s theories you might employ in your own classroom to ensure that learning takes place and management problems (e.g., discipline problems/limited number of homework being completed/inattentive students during lessons) are held to a minimum.
