Chapter 5 (Behavioral Theories of Learning)
  1. Purpose of Activity
    • Demonstrate how Behavioral Learning Theory is applicable to a real classroom.
    • This activity should be completed when the chapter is completed and analyzed.

  2. Key Concept
    • Teachers utilize elements from both Behavioral Learning and Social Learning Theories to establish order and organization so that the majority of time is allocated to teaching, not management problems (e.g., calling out, talking during lessons, inattentiveness).

  3. Put this brainstorming graphic organizer on the board/chart and have your students respond to the question in the center of the graphic organizer (accept at least a minimum of 6 of responses).

  4. Transfer their responses to this charted format:

  5. After you have a list of a minimum of 6 responses, divide your class into groups of four and assign different responses to each group. Provide them with at least 20 minutes or more to complete their assigned section of the chart. Then permit each group to report their findings, and you should chart their responses on your chart. Discuss the findings after all groups have reported and their responses have been recorded. I suggest the follow-up questions.
    • Why did you select that solution?
    • Why would this theorist support this solution?

  6. Then have your class reflect on this activity. To facilitate the reflection, you might want to ask: "How will the knowledge of behavioral learning principles help teachers in their classrooms?" Give your students 2 minutes for this activity, and have one/two students share their reflections.
