Research Project
  1. Please read the scenario and respond to the questions below. Remember your answers must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class.

    Scenario
    You have been give the job of a seventh grade middle school programmer, and one of your responsibilities is to set up classes for the seventh grade. You have identified these facts/data about the seventh grade:

    • There are 140 students and 7 classes and teachers (i.e., 20 students per class).
    • 77 students are have scored below the standard in both reading and mathematics.
    • 49 students have met the standard in reading and mathematics.
    • 14 students scored above the standard in reading and mathematics.
    • Approximately 14 students of all the seventh graders are LEPs (i.e., their primary language is a language other than English)
    • Approximately 5 students of all seventh graders have attendance problems (i.e., have missed 10 days or more in the seventh grade).

    Questions

    1. Using your readings and class discussions, describe your philosophy for:
      • Instruction
      • Accommodating Instruction to meet individual needs
    2. Using your readings and class discussions, describe how you would make-up each class (i.e., type of students per class). For example, you might want to evenly distribute above level students so they can assist the teacher. Hint: try to evenly distribute students who could possibly work with the low performing students.
    3. Using your readings and class discussions, explain the reasons for the method you used to make-up the seventh grade classes.

    Scenario
    You are a new teacher in 3rd grade (30 students) in a school that has a record of failure on standardized reading tests. Your class has the following results on a reading test:

    Questions

    1. Describe the make-up/composition of your class in terms of these results in reading.
    2. How would you accommodate the differences in reading for your class. You must remember to take into account the following key points about instruction:
      • Self-esteem of learners must be maintained;
      • Lessons have to meet the needs of these children;
      • Materials used must be engaging and age appropriate.


  3. Observe 5 hours in grades 2-5. During this time, you should observe both Math and Reading lessons. Please complete the following activities:

    Complete this chart (in PDF format) during your observations.

    Summarize your findings and address in detail the issues that affect instruction.

    Identify the learning theories the teacher used in the instruction. Also, include the theories that were missing that might have improved the instruction. Explain how their inclusion might have improved instruction.

  4. You are a reporter for a parent newspaper called News from our Schools. The editor has just asked you to write a column that focuses on the following issues: (Please remember your article must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class).
    • Identify how teachers accommodate their instruction to meet the needs of all children.
    • Give at least 5 strategies teachers are using to achieve this.
    • How are computers being used in this process of meeting the needs of all students.
    • Give your opinion of what you have observed.


  5. In a three page Reaction Paper, react to the following statements: (Please remember you must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class):
    • Teachers should make every attempt to meet the needs of their class by accommodating/differentiating instruction.
    • Teachers should vary their lessons so their students remained engaged in lessons.
    • Teachers should utilize technology in their classrooms to help support instruction.


  6. You have just read the interest inventories from your class, and learned that they like music, television and sports. Using this information, describe in a position paper how you would utilize their interests to accommodate their different instructional needs. Please remember you must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class.
