Research Projects
  1. You are experienced teacher (i.e., 15 years teaching). In a paper describe the advice you would give a new teacher about the following classroom management issues: (Please remember you must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class):
    • The first day of school with a new class
    • Managing routine misbehaviors
    • Prevention of misbehaviors
    • Maintaining good behavior
    • Effective use of time
    • Dealing with serious problems (fighting/stealing)
    • Using the home-school connection to promote learning and appropriate behavior in school.

  2. You are a new teacher and it is a week before school starts. While you are sitting in the warm sun at a local beach, you spot this sign:

    • You then slowly begin to think about discipline and become understandably anxious. To alleviate your anxious feelings, you begin writing the strategies you would utilize so that most of your time is spent teaching not simply correcting misbehavior.
    • In a well developed paper, share your thinking about behavior/classroom management. (Please remember you must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class).

  3. Please read the scenario and respond to the questions below:

    Scenario
    Mr. Jones is teaching a lesson in Mathematics about finding the radius of a circle. It is his fourth meeting with this class. He stops and begins this monologue: Mr. Jones: My wife is an excellent hockey player. She can skate quick circular patterns and has led her league in goals and assists for two straight years. Her team…………………….. Wait, where was I? Yes, the formula for this mathematical operation is r=……………….… Oh, she is also an excellent runner who runs a 1 mile circular track several times a week under 30 minutes. Oh, where was I????

    While he was engaged in this monologue, the following behaviors took place:

    • Marcia and James began whispering to each other and giggling;
    • Shandra and Jason exchanged glances that they were upset with his monologue;
    • Maria and Ben exchanged phone numbers and smiles;
    • Most of the class looked bored and disinterested; and
    • The bell rang and the class left quickly.

    Questions
    (Please remember you must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class).

    1. If Mr. Jones continues this type of teaching, what will happen to this class the rest of the semester? How do you know this?
    2. If you were the principal observing this lesson, describe the classroom management problems you observed and identify how they impacted on instruction.
    3. Based on your observations above, what instructional advice would you provide Mr. Jones after his lesson?

  4. Please read the scenario and respond to the questions below:

    Scenario
    It is the fourth week of school and the rules, consequences and routines have been firmly established. However, three students seem to exhibit behavior that forces you to spend valuable instructional time managing their behavior. The behaviors are as follows:

    • Student 1: During a quiet activity, s/he cracks joke and disrupts the class. This happens several times during the week when you are working with a group/individual child.
    • Student 2: Gifted student always asks to go to the bathroom during math lessons. The student always looks tired. You spoke to his mother and she says he gets at least 8-10 hours of sleep every night.
    • Student 3: During seatwork time, when you are your desk marking papers, the student will take a pencil/pen and balance it on his/her nose. Also, s/he will take a ruler and hit spit balls. The student is very popular with his/her classmates and they enjoy the stunts s/he performs.

    Questions
    (Please remember you must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class).

    1. Identify the reinforcer(s) for each student and explain the reasons for selecting them.
    2. Describe in detail how you would effectively manage the behavior of these students so that they stop disrupting and distracting the class from learning. This description should combine both theory and practice.

  5. Please read the scenario and respond to the questions below:

    Scenario
    You are in your fifth year of teaching, and have been assigned a new teacher to mentor/help. In the evening, you receive the following e-mail from this teacher:

    • Dear _______:

      I had a bad day again. My students don't seem to listen to me. I am unable to get through a lesson without yelling. Also, it takes us at least 15 minutes to get down the stairs to lunch. I'm so frustrated and tired.

      D. N.

    Questions
    (Please remember you must demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class).

    1. List 5 possible causes for the teacher's problems. How do you know this?
    2. In an e-mail with a two page attachment, describe how you would help this teacher better manage the class.

  6. Parents/Caregivers have heard that you have had considerable success with difficult children. They have invited you to speak about your management program at an Open Night Meeting. Prepare a paper that describes your management program that you could use to address this meeting. (Remember to demonstrate that you have completed the readings assigned in class).
