Statement: The mass media contribute directly to the levels of violence in our society. Whats in the news? Go to the following website http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0329/p01s05-ussc.html to read a report indicating that there is mounting evidence that links TV viewing to violence. What do the experts say? In the past forty years, much research has been conducted on the relationship between violence on television and violence in society. Some of this research is reported in your textbook. Most of this research concludes that when children and youths watch violence on television, they are more likely to act aggressively or violently themselves, especially in situations that are conducive to violence. Television encourages people toward violence in three ways: First, action dramas can be arousing to viewers and may stimulate them in the direction of physical activity and release. Second, television provides viewers with legitimizing models for violence in much the same way that parents or peers can serve as models. Third, television conveys attitudes and values, and it can teach children to view violence or antisocial behavior as a desirable or "manly" way to behave. What do you think? Note down your answers to the following questions and discuss them in class.
