Where Do You Stand

Statement: Sexism is no longer the problems it once was.

What’s in the news?

Go to the following website to read about a survey that found that sexism is rife on the internet - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2562601.stm.

What do the experts say?

“Sexism in the media, workplace and at home continue today in spite of the fact that it is more than 30 years since the 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed. The average woman still earns only 60 percent of men’s salaries; TV advertising and movies still often portray women in a degrading way; and society still expects women to be the primary caregivers at home. However, women have many more opportunities today than in the past to educate themselves, to go in to a career they are interested in and to choose if and when to have a family.”

  1. As a society, we have not yet achieved "comparable worth" in America, although there has been considerable progress toward this end over the past three decades. Do you think this is a worthy and important goal? Why or why not?
  2. If you answered "Yes," what more do you think can/should be done to achieve the goal of comparable worth?
