Online Activities

Go to the sites listed and find the specific areas mentioned in the capsules below.

  • American Association of University Women
This is the homepage of the AAUW, a 160,000-member organization that lobbies for education and equity and operates the Educational Foundation, which funds research on girls and education, community action projects, and fellowships and grants. The AAUW site also links to the Legal Advocacy Fund, which funds women seeking judicial compensation for sex discrimination in higher education.

For more than a century, the AAUW has been influencing legislative issues concerning women in American society. Click on Issues and then on Fact Sheets and Position Papers to find out what some of these topics involve. Do you know anyone who is a member of the AAUW? You may wish to speak with them about the organization and what kinds of issues are dealt with.

  • National Women's History Project
This site explores history from the vantage point of women. Includes information on programs for women's studies, a network of scholars in women's history, and a quiz of your own knowledge of the issues.

Click on The Learning Place, and then click on History Quiz. Take the quiz. How did you fare? Does this make you want to know more about women's history?

  • National Organization for Women Legal Defense and Education Fund
The NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund homepage offers legislative updates on affirmative action, economic equality, and racial diversity. It includes press releases and a newsletter.

NOW is probably best known for its support of women's rights during the modern women's movement in the late 1960s and the 1970s. Click on What’s New. Take a look at the various document and article titles that you will find there. Pick a couple that are of interest to you and click on them. Read the contents. What are your impressions of the cause for women's rights as we enter the 21st century?

  • Allyn & Bacon Gender and Gender Inequality Links
This page contains links to dozens of sites on the topic of gender inequality and the sociological significance of gender and gender inequality.

Click on Gender and Society: A Matter of Nature or Nurture? Read the contents. If your textbook has a discussion of this topic, read it thoroughly. After you are completed with these readings, write a brief position paper in which you argue in favor of one position or the other with respect to gender.
