Go to the sites listed and find the specific areas mentioned in the capsules below.
- U.S. Dept. of Commerce Bureau of the Census
This is the homepage of the bureau. "Other Official Statistics" and "Federal Statistics" are accessible from this page, plus Census Bureau employment opportunities and the 2000 census.
Go to People and click on Projections; then, click on State; finally, click on Total Population of States. There, you will find projections for state populations between 1995 and 2025. Find your home state in the list. Are you at all surprised by the population projections for your state? Compare the projections for your state with some others. How do they differ? Why do you think they differ?
- United Nations
This is the homepage of the United Nations, which contains a link to the International Conference on Population and Development. Click on About the United Nations; then start with U.N. in Brief. After you have read the contents, you may wish to investigate further. After you have completed your exploration, write a brief report on the United Nations.
- Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services
This is the homepage of the department, with links to data and such topics as Immigration and Naturalization Service biometrics and corporate information, as well as how the DOJ is reacting to the terrorism.
Under Hot Topics click on Statistics, then on the Publication List. Then scroll down to the Annual Reports and click on Legal Immigration, 2001 (or the most recent report they have available when you log on). Are you in favor of allowing people from other countries to immigrate to America? Do you feel that the nation is permitting too many (or too few) people to immigrate? Have your views changed since September 11th? Why or Why not?
- U.S. Department Of Housing and Urban Development
The homepage of the department includes news, consumer information, loans, grants, contracts, regulations, partnerships, and disaster relief.
Click on Buying (under Homes). What kinds of homes are available through HUD? If you were in the market for a home, would you be interested in one offered by HUD? Why or why not?
- National Coalition for the Homeless
This coalition is "a national advocacy network of homeless persons, activists, service providers, and others committed to ending homelessness."
Click on Facts About Homelessness. There are several pages of "Facts" to explore. Are you surprised by how many homeless people there are or who the homeless are?
- Habitat for Humanity International
Through this organization, volunteers build "decent, affordable housing" for those in need. From this page, visit the new gift shop, search for local affiliates, or read true stories from the organization.
Former President Jimmy Carter has been a leader within this organization for many years. Click on How It Works. This will give you a general idea of how the Habitat organization functions to provide homes at a low cost. If you like, click on the other descriptive icons within this site to find out more about the Habitat for Humanity.
- National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty
