What do the experts say?

“Former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich has observed that America is in danger of splitting into a two-tiered society, consisting of the affluent and the socioeconomically disadvantaged. Consider this statistic: In the state of California, the average annual income of the richest fifth of the population is well over $125,000, while the average annual income of the poorest fifth is less than $10,000. As a whole, the United States is one of the world’s most affluent societies, but this general affluence is not shared equally by its population segments. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, this pattern has been growing even more unequal over the past 25 years: the wealthy are wealthier and the poor are poorer.”
