Problem Overview

cover.jpg All societies define the contexts and limits of acceptable sexual behavior and restrict sexual behavior in some way. Prostitution and child pornography are examples of sexual behavior that is constructed as both deviant and criminal in U.S. society and law. Behavior relating to sexual orientation is not so clearly defined. In the U.S. homophobia underlies widespread stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and even hate crimes against lesbians and gays. Other issues concern the role and status of homosexuals as employees, domestic partners, parents, teachers, and members of the military.
