Go to the sites listed and find the specific areas mentioned in the capsules below.
- The Alan Guttmacher Institution
This organization is devoted to research, policy analysis, and public education. On this site, you will find information regarding sexual behavior, pregnancy, contraception, abortion, STDs, and the law with regard to these topics. Also featured: a question of the week, such as "Does the availability of condoms in a high school increase sexual activity among high school students?"
Click on Sexual Behavior. This screen contains a variety of news releases and policy statements on a variety of issues relevant to human sexual behavior. Pick one that is of interest to you and write a brief essay on your reactions to what you learned about the issue.
- Women Organized Against Rape
This organization is dedicated to helping survivors of sexual assault and abuse, and to fighting sexual violence. Includes information and resources on sexual assault, newsletter highlights, mission statement, and the number of the 24-hour hotline: (215) 985-3333
First, click on About Us and familiarize yourself with WOAR; then click on Support--this will tell you more about the activities that this organization sponsors and supports. In your textbook, you learned that rape is a power-related rather than a sexually motivated act. How do you think ongoing misunderstanding of rape affects the average American's interpretation of this crime?
- Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League
This is the homepage of the league, a youth service agency serving the Washington, DC, metro area as well as Maryland and Northern Virginia. Its mission: "to support and enhance the self esteem of sexual minority youth who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or who may be questioning his/her sexuality." Access to relevant information and programs is available.
The slogan of this organization is: "A Safe Place To Be Who You Are." This slogan highlights a very basic controversy about homosexuality: Is sexual orientation fixed at birth or is it "chosen." If we accept that sexual orientation is biological, then homosexuals merely "are what they are." Obviously, religious beliefs also play a part in this puzzle and depending upon your own beliefs, you may have a difficult time even accepting what this organization stands for. Click on Programs. As you learn more about this organization, use this experience as a "lesson" in objectivity.
- National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
Click on News & Views. These screens will give you a better idea of some of the controversy surrounding gays and lesbians in American society. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is devoted to fighting for rights for homosexuals. How do you feel about this controversy? Should homosexuals be treated any differently than their heterosexual counterparts? Why or why not?
